Team Biographies.
Doug PerryThe President of Cana Management, Doug Perry has been a respected and trusted authority in the Co-operative Housing movement for almost two decades. Doug joined CANA in the early 1980s, and together with the late Fred Bustin, purchased CANA in 1988. After many years dedicated to leading Canada’s first and largest co-operative management company, Doug has an unparalleled understanding of the Co-op housing sector. This knowledge and experience combined with his friendly, enthusiastic nature means that he genuinely inspires and encourages all who meet him. In June 2005 Doug’s service to co-operative housing was recognized when he was presented with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Award for outstanding contribution to co-operative housing. “Beyond providing strong management support for housing co-ops, Doug has been tireless in his support of the co-op housing sector,” said Nicholas Gazzard, CHF Canada’s acting Executive Director. “He has shared his knowledge and expertise in workshops, participated in co-op housing lobby campaigns and actively defended his client co-ops’ interests.” Doug and his wife Megan enjoy wine tasting tours, golfing and spending time with their grandchildren. Sean PerryAs the Vice President of Operations, Sean rose through the ranks to this position with over 10 years of experience serving in all areas of operation within the company. Her skills in organizing, customer relations, and marketing focus our team on the future of Cana. She is working towards completing her Masters degree in Business Administration from Simon Fraser University to further her previous studies in marketing and advertising. As a strong volunteer with her former Co-op and other organizations, Sean shares her experience and dedication to assisting all Co-op volunteers. As former member of UVIC’s varsity basketball team, Sean often leads us with the power of teamwork. A party person at heart, Sean’s theme days and company party planning have become legendary. Kathy Baxter
Kathy works hard as Cana’s Controller but her commitment to Co-operative housing began in 1991 when she started at Cana as a part-time Co-ordinator. She enjoyed working with BC Housing on an Ad-Hoc committee setting up the new Rent Calculation manual in 1999. Kathy moved to Hoy Creek Co-op in 1986 and was the President of the Board for two years and the Maintenance Chair for two years. She then moved to Salal Co-op in 1991 where she was the Maintenance chair for six years and is now the President. Lisa Berting
Lisa leads our Financial Services Management Team with her extensive banking background, having worked in a credit union for ten years before joining us here at Cana in 1998. She is working towards completing her certificate for accounting. She served on the Board of Directors at Misty Ridge, her own Co-op, and is currently the Maintenance Chair as well as serving on the Finance committee. Cam Carruthers
Cam leads our Maintenance Management Services Team with his extensive experience in property management, institutional investment, corporate accommodation, and strata management. He holds a graduate degree in urban land economics from the University of British Columbia and is working towards completing his certificate for licensed property management. Cam has several years of insider experience as a CMHC portfolio Management Officer. He served on the Board of Directors at his own Co-op, Pacific Heights, and is the current chair of the Finance Committee. He actively volunteers with a number of organizations and reportedly makes a mean chili. A Saskatchewanian at heart, Cam couldn’t help but be drawn to the West Coast where he joined our Team in the fall of 2004. Juliet Pendray
Juliet is one of our Co-ordinator Services Team Leaders, and has been a Cana Co-ordinator since 1998. She contributes over seven years experience with managing housing Co-operatives, as well as twelve years experience in general property management. Her background working for and with non-profit groups has contributed usefully to her knowledge and skills, and over the past twenty years she has served as a Board member in various sports, environmental and political organizations. She is currently actively involved with the Vancouver Mycological Society and the Vancouver Natural History Society, and is a working member of the VNHS Conservation section. An avid hiker and amateur botanist, Juliet occasionally mystifies us with strange and musty songs she’s written about fungi, moss and lichen. Marilyn Alviar
Marilyn has always been a “people-person”. She enjoyed her thirteen years at Hillside Co-op, seven of which were spent as the Membership Chair. The last twenty years of work were spent happily as an Orthodontic dental assistant, but it was time to get out of the mouth and on to something new! She joined Cana in 2002 to work with the ground-breaking Off-Site Team. Her department chose her to be their Team leader in 2005. She’s also the Team leader for Sales and Marketing and uses the skills she’s learned through her Mary Kay business to promote Cana. She’s married with two teen-age boys, who everyone knows are the best kids anyone could hope to have! Anita Hille
Anita’s love for Co-operative Housing began in 1994 when her family moved to Chances Co-op where she served on the Education committee. They moved to Pacific Heights Co-op in 1999 where she served as Director for two years. She began her long career with Cana in 1995 as a Co-ordinator on the Off-Site Team. She began her position as a Co-ordinator Services Team Leader in 2005 and also works with the Cana Training team. Anita loves her husband daughter and cats, not necessarily in that order! Brenda Horne
Brenda has been a longtime Co-operator. Her family moved to Whattlekainum in 1983 and Brenda served for the next thirteen years as a Director, Building Rep, and Maintenance Co-ordinator. She is very proud of participating in writing the original Rules for the Co-op. Her family then moved to Anskar Co-op where they lived for four years. While there, she served on the Board as a Director. Brenda came to Cana in 1987 and has tirelessly served as a Co-ordinator. She was promoted to Co-ordinator Services Team Leader in 2005. Brenda has been married for twenty-nine years and has one daughter and two beautiful grand-daughters. She has pictures if you’d like to see them! Albert Hille
Albert came to work with Cana in 2005. As the owner of Albert Hille Consulting he has revolutionized Cana’s Team structure. His experience as Co-op Director as well as his leadership and organizational skills has directed Cana to new heights. He is the Team Leader of the Training Team and the Master chili chef! Jamie Ritchie
We are so pleased to have Jamie work with Cana in an advisory capacity with our consulting department. His area of expertise includes the Project Administration Liaison Service (PALS). Jamie has been working in the non-profit and Co-operative housing field for the past eighteen years. He has worked extensively in the development of new Co-ops and the provision of effective governance and management with existing Co-ops. Jamie has been involved, at the local level, with training Co-op members. He has served as a Director (and President) of CHF/BC, chair of CHF Canada’s Federation Committee, and is currently a trustee with the Co-op housing Stabilization Fund. Additionally, Jamie has recently been awarded the CMHC Award for Outstanding Contribution to Co-operative Housing for over 20 years of hard work in the sector. |
